The Standard American Diet contains only about half of the daily recommended amount of fiber. Fiber is an important component of the Chocolate Diet and other Nutrition Coach programs as it helps one feeling satiated with fewer calories for the same portion of food. This means that individuals that consume a high-fiber meal will feel fuller, longer, without being tempted to snack or consume too many calories during or between meals.
Plant-based foods like whole grains, leafy greens, fresh fruits, and colorful vegetables are all chock full of fiber. Since humans cannot digest the fiber, these parts of the plant result in zero calories and just pass through the digestive tract. Studies have suggested that high daily fiber intake has these benefits over the long term:
- Prevents constipation
- Improves overall gastrointestinal health
- Improves glucose tolerance and the insulin response
- Reduces hypertension and other coronary heart disease risk factors
- Reduces the risk of colon cancer
