Pasta and bread are processed foods that no longer have the full nutritional complement that the original whole grains had, including minerals, vitamins, phytonutrients, and fiber. White pasta and white bread are a much worse choice than whole grain pasta or whole grain bread; yet, it is clear that no pasta and bread is anywhere near as healthy as the whole grains are! Additionally, white pasta and white bread are very high on the glycemic index, making these poor options for anyone with diabetes or trying to lose weight.
Instead, these whole grains or pseudograins are the best alternatives: amaranth, barley, brown rice, buckwheat, bulgur, farro, grano, kañiwa, millet, oats, quinoa, rye, spelt, sorghum, teff, triticale, and wild rice.
The next time you consider having some pasta or bread, fix some whole grains instead. Your body will thank you.
