“Walking is the best possible exercise. Habituate yourself to walk very far.” – Thomas Jefferson
Discover Why Walking 10,000 Steps for Weight Loss Is an Ideal Aerobic Exercise
If you don’t belong to a gym and haven’t exercised in a while, I suggest walking ten thousand steps as the best place to begin your exercise program. Why?
- It is 100 percent free.
- You already know how to walk so no special training is required.
- Walking does not require any special equipment, but I do recommend good athletic or walking shoes.
- It burns calories.
- Steps can easily be counted by a good pedometer or smart phone.
- Walking is both modular and scalable.
Most people understand the first five benefits but are confused about what I mean by modular and scalable. First, walking is a modular exercise, so you can walk different amounts all day long, both during your regular routine and additional exercise. For example, one could walk 1500 steps at 7:00 AM, 2500 steps at 11:30 AM, and then 6000 steps at 8 PM, and walked a total of 10,000 steps.
Second, it is scalable. This means, many people might start out only walking 700 steps a day, due to their fitness level. However, by exercising daily and eating right with a plan like the Chocolate Diet, they will lose weight and become more fit over time, so after some months, they might be walking 7000 steps a day.
10,000 Steps is approximately 5 miles. Sedentary people walk less than 2000 steps a day, or less than a single mile. Healthy, fit, thin individuals pe can easily walk 10,000 steps.
The bottom line: walking 10,000 steps a day is suggested as one of your process goals for consistent weight loss or permanent weight maintenance. Walking also helps build some muscles and increases the overall health of the cardiovascular system.
